Melasma

Melasma is a skin condition that causes patches of discolouration which are typically brown in appearance or freckle-like spots. It usually looks like age or sun spots but on a larger scale.

The most common place to find melasma is the face, although cases have been reported on other areas of the body such as the neck, décolleté and arms. Experts still find it difficult to understand why melasma occurs. It is, however, thought to be caused by pigment-producing cells in the skin (melanocytes) producing too much pigment (melanin).

It is this overproduction of the cells that defines the colour of your skin. The most common trigger of melasma is sun exposure or use of sunbeds. It can also be exacerbated by skin products that irritate your skin, making the condition worse. Sensitivity to oestrogen and progesterone are also known triggers, so if you are taking birth control medication, are pregnant or having hormone therapy your risk of developing melasma is greater.

At Sur Medispa we have many options to treat melasma. We strongly recommend daily use of a broad spectrum SPF 40+ which will prevent worsening of the condition. We also recommend a prescription home skin care protocol, suitable for hyperpigmentation and melasma, to use daily. In-clinic treatments include the world's leading device which gives best results for melasma, Sylfirm X. Cool laser, Bloomea, Chemical Peels and Dermalux Tri Wave LED system.
