Snoring

Snoring is the vibration of respiratory structures and the resulting sound due to obstructed air movement during breathing while sleeping. Research suggest that snoring is one of the main factors of sleep deprivation. Several factors contribute to snoring. They are, among others, nasal congestion (blocked nose), anatomy of the oral cavity, changes in the nasal septum (septal deviation), obesity or sudden weight loss, consumption of sedatives or other drugs, and smoking and alcohol consumption.

Snoring results in interrupted sleep, which leads to the development of daytime sleepiness, irritability, poor concentration at work, during daily activities and even a low libido. The management for the treatment of snoring in the UK is often approached in a stepwise manner. This starts with weight management, and then to devices to be worn at night-time, then through to surgical treatment.

At Sur Medispa we treat snoring with Somnilase

The Somnilase laser treatment reduces snoring by strengthening the structure of the soft palate and uvula. This is achieved through microscopic removal (fractional ablation) of tissue from the mucous membrane. During the Somnilase treatment a fixed amount of energy is applied to the area. As a result, the soft palate structure is improved (so called “hypertrophy of mucosa”) and becomes more stable over time.
